The island of Itsukushima has long been venerated as a holy place. Since ancient times, gratitude and reverence have been expressed to deities by taking a boat ride around the island in a traditional Shinto ritual known as “oshima kaishiki,” also called “oshima meguri.”

The ritual begins in the early morning with a boat carrying Shinto priests leading a boat of participants to Itsukushima. Sailing along the coast, homage is paid to deities enshrined at the subsidiary shrines of Itsukushima Shrine. At one of them named Yabusaki Shrine, a rite known as “otogui” ceremony is performed.

Itsukushima Pilgrimage and Ceremony

On our Miyajima Tour Cruise, participants will visit each shrine by circling Itsukushima (Miyajima) clockwise, following the same route as oshima kaishiki. They will give their prayers aboard the boat, with the exception of Aonoriura Shrine where participants will disembark.
We invite you to take this special opportunity to encounter the beauty of Japan’s landscape and the legacy of prayer that has been passed down through generations.

photo taken of the Itsukushima Shrine with a nice view

A World Heritage Site, one of the most iconic Japanese cultural wonders

The present shrine and grand torii gate are built in a construction style dating back more than 800 years. Enjoy a mystical scenery that changes with the ebb and flow of the tide. At high tide, the shrine buildings and torii gate appear to float on the sea, while at low tide, the surface emerges, allowing visitors to walk to the torii gate.

  • Climb Mt. Misen

View from Mt. Misen with a view of the surrounding mountains and ocean

The Mt. Misen Primeval Forest is inscribed on the World Heritage List alongside Itsukushima Shrine. This millennia-old unspoiled natural treasure covers just 30 square meters but provides habitat to 30% of all bird species in Japan. Climb to the summit of Mt. Misen while immersing in the sights, sounds, and scents of nature. For a less strenuous option, take the Miyajima Ropeway to the mountainside and start climbing. The summit observatory offers a stunning 360-degree view of the Seto Inland Sea.

  • Daisho-in TemplePrayer service, meditation, sutra copying

    Aerial view of Daisho-in Temple

Daisho-in, which is said to have been established in 806, is the most historic temple on the island of Itsukushima (Miyajima).

In addition to prayer and memorial services, visitors can take part in experiences including zazen meditation, esoteric Buddhist meditation, sutra and Buddha image copying, prayer bead bracelet making, eating Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, and kaidan meguri (a form of self-purification by walking down a dark corridor).
